What is HTTPS? HTTPS actually stands for HTTP over SSL (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer). In simplest terms, HTTPS is oftentimes referred to as SSL. HTTPS encrypts and decrypts information to and from a Web server. HTTPS normally employs a SSL 128-bit encryption key. The SSL encryption key used during an HTTPS connection ensures that any information passed between your computer and the Web server cannot be deciphered if intercepted. HTTPS is a standard security measure used by government sites and online commerce sites. SSL Encryption Key The encryption key in SSL is based on a hash value. This value is computed from a base input number using a hashing algorithm. Essentially, the hash value is a summary of the original value. The important thing about a hash value is that it is nearly impossible to derive the original input number without knowing the data used to create the hash value. Encryption keys use complex algorithms and extremely large hash values. A 128-bit encrypted number, as used in USA Federal’s QuickConnect Online system, has 2128 or 3,402,823,669,209,384,634,633,746,074,300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different possible combinations! Top How do I know I'm accessing a secure Web page? One of the easiest ways to tell if you are accessing a secure Web page is to look in the Address bar of your Web browser. Secure Web sites are identified with an “https” in the URL and a padlock symbol in the lower right-hand corner of most Web browsers. When you access any of USA Federal's secure systems, your browser will be given a Web page with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that starts with “https”. As you access different secure pages, your browser will encrypt all of the data being passed between your computer and the Web server. Is QuickConnect Online Log in area Secure? Yes. It is safe to enter information in the QuickConnect Online. The login information you enter is not transmitted until you click the Log In button, which establishes a secure session between your Web browser and USA Federal's systems. Your log in data is then encrypted over HTTPS before being sent over the Internet to USA Federal for authentication.
