SMishing Alert: February 28, 2008

SMishing Alert: March 5, 2008

Several credit unions have reported it's members and non-members are receiving text messages claiming to be from their credit union. This fraud is known as: SMiSHing (fraud through cell phone text messages). The message states that their online bill pay service has expired and that they need to renew it ASAP by calling a “toll-free” number. Those calling the number heard an automated message from “The Credit Union.” Members were asked to input their credit card or debit card number. It’s unknown if any other private information was asked for.
Do not follow through with this text message.

North Island Credit Union is currently experiencing a SMiShing attack as described above. This type of cell/text message phishing is fraudulent. If you receive a text message or a member reports receiving a text message from North Island, please forward it to abuse@myisland.com, then delete the message.

While the attack is not targeted specifically to USA Federal CU members, you may receive one of these text messages.

If you are a member and feel you have been a victim of this attack, please contact USa Federal immediately through our 24-Hour Contact Center.
