Sweetwater High Golf Program Scores with USA Federal Donation

San Diego, Calif., April 14, 2006 – It is only Spring but it felt like Christmas to the Sweetwater High School Golf Team. Thanks to the generosity of avid golfers inside USA Federal Credit Union, Sweetwater High School received a haul of donated premium equipment, drivers, clubs, golf shoes, shirts, balls, gloves and other items. A packed SUV showed up at Sweetwater High to deliver the equipment valued at over $4,000.
“Our kids are ecstatic!,” said Sweetwater High’s Golf Coach Don Howard, “USA Federal’s generosity was amazing. The balls, gloves, towels, and tees were all gone before I even turned around.” The most coveted items were the premium Titleist drivers. The team has been working with 5-10 year old clubs which, thanks to a technological revolution in golf equipment, are very outdated.

“Our kids just can’t afford this kind of quality equipment. The Titleist drivers were of course the big prize for my kids,” said Howard, “We had a great time holding competitions to earn the right to ‘win’ them and put them in their bag. They are even going to the range on their own time over the weekend to learn to hit their new clubs.”

The golf program is more than just a sport to Howard and his players. “Golf is much more than just a sport to our youth. We may not always win, but we can learn the trials, tribulations, and integrity that comes with this great game. These are things I can't always get through to the kids in the classroom,” he said.

The donation grew out of a chance pairing of USA Federal employee Dave Sigal’s two-some and Coach Howard’s two-some at the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course. As they talked, the needs of the school’s golf team came up and Sigal decided to help. “We have a lot of golfers at USA Federal,” Sigal said, “I asked how we could help Sweetwater High and its golf team -- and the response was overwhelming!” Some of the extra clubs and bags may be given to some of the deserving or needy players at the end of the season.
